Scarlett Johansson (born November 22 1984 New York City New York, U.S.) American actor and performer whose performance versatility earned her praise across many genres from period drama to thriller and action adventure. Johansson is the daughter of a renowned architect, as well as producer, was brought up as a child in New York City. Her twin brother Hunter were the youngest of four siblings. She developed an interest in acting at an early age and was auditioning for commercials before the age of seven. She joined the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute shortly after and attended the Professional Children's School, Manhattan for further training. As a child Johansson was in Sophistry alongside Ethan Hawke and made her film debut in Rob Reiner's North in 1994. Johansson played the lead role as a character in Just Cause (1995), before making her big break with Manny & Lo - a tale about two sisters who are orphans who get away. The Horse Whisperer (2000) where she was an teen with a defect due to an accident garnered an acclaim from critics. After that, in Ghost World 2001 (as the young, sarcastic teenager Rebecca), Johansson gained even more recognition.
